Chia-Chun Wang et.al. conducted a study to  evaluate the hypothesis that the increased relative biological effectiveness at the distal edge of proton beams is the cause. The researchers concluded that increased rib fracture rate seen in our trial is probably associated with the increased  linear energy transfer and relative biological effectiveness at the distal edge of proton beams.
